16th of Pflugzeit:
After the previous nights activities the group retired to the Temple. Still not sure if something was about to happen given the gates were left open, they realized that they would need their sleep. A sleep that was broken only 5 hours later as sun was just beginning to rise, casting the village in twilight.
Matt was awoken by the screams of a woman, and dashed out with his bow to see what was going on. Johann followed soon afterwards, but banged on Nathaniel and Rorek’s doors to wake them up to join them. Nathaniel rushed out straight away, but Rorek decided to take his time to put his armour on.
Matt made it out into the main temple hall first to find Hans and a few villagers around a woman on the floor of the temple, preparing to give birth. The groups first response after confirming everything was going the way it was meant to, was to quickly head out the front of the temple to make sure Mahtias was not nearby. Matt even attempted to close the door, but was stopped by the midwife who said they still needed to get some supplies inside, like water and towels.
So instead they got the rest of the villagers that had woken up, but were not needed, to back up and give the place some room. So all of them found themselves hanging around the well. It was about this time that Mathias appeared from the tavern in his full gear, and started making his way to the temple. At Matt’s urging Nathaniel intercepted Mathias and flashed him one of his famous winning smiles. The rest of the group could only shake their heads thinking that he was going to get them all killed, but were surprised to see that Mathias was put off by this and had actually stopped. Nathaniel was able to convince him that it was just a normal birth going on, and that the screams were nothing demonic. Mathias told him though that the town was still suspect, and that he will see that baby one way or the other after its birth.
Mathias then made his way out of the town to go for a walk to vent off some frustration, taking the North gate and then heading East into the woods. Matt decided he was going to follow him, and decided to sneak off without telling anyone. The rest of the group failed to notice that he started to shadow Mathias. Nathaniel wanting to see what he could do to make sure Mahtias didn’t have any proof to use against the village went to the tavern to inquire if there had been any other children recently that had been born. He found out there had been, but it had died in childbirth. He put two and two together, and figured that it was the last mutant baby that he saw the mother of being consoled in the church yesterday.
About this time Rorek finally had his armour on, and dashed out to meet up with the others in battle, only to find the birth. He quickly decided to head outside and join the others at the well. He noticed Matt was missing, and brought it up with Nathaniel and Johann. They realise that there’s not much they can do for Matt at this stage as they don’t have the skills to also follow him or Mathias, so they instead think it’s best to set up watch and find out more of what they’re dealing with.
Johann is set to take up watch at the gate, and to give early warning if Mathias is seen returning. Rorek says he’ll go into the Temple to keep an eye on things there. Rorek then tells Nathaniel to sneak into Mathias’ room and see what he can discover.
Nathaniel is able to get into the Witch Hunter’s room without too much difficulty, as everyone is too distracted with the birth and worrying over what will happen when it is born. In Mathias’ room Nathaniel notices that a simple trap involving a sock caught on the door and a hook on the ground would let Mathias know if anyone had entered his room. Nathaniel resets it, and then has a look around the room without touching anything else. In it he spots a backpack, a hunting bow and quiver, and some spare clothes. Not wanting to risk any other traps he leaves and heads back to join the others.
Rorek is confronted by the midwife who asks him to leave, but he firmly puts his foot down and says no. Hans then joins in, and asks that he simply wait out the front of the only door into the temple, Rorek considers it and eventually agrees.
While this is going on Matt has been following Mathias deeper into the woods, where he is debating whether he should try anything. He is quite uncertain, but has been seeing Mathias work himself up as he fails to find anything to kill. So when Mathias turns back Matt decides he can’t risk anything happening to the child and attacks him.
The first shot by Matt catches Mathias by surprise and the arrow pins him to a tree, also causing 3 damage. With Matt at long range outside of what his pistol can reach Mathias starts to pull out the arrow. Matt takes the chance to unload some rapid shots into Mathias causing 3, and than 5 damage. Mathias continues to pull at the arrow pinning him and almost finishes pulling it out. Matt takes aim and shoots again, but Mathias dodges causing the arrow to just graze him for 3 damage. Mathias finally gets free and rushes Matt, firing a pistol shot at his head but missing by inches. Panic Matt attempts to shoot him again, but the shot goes wide. Mathias is able to engage with Matt and delivers a nasty slash across his body for 8 damage. Matt jumps back and lets go of his stomach long enough to get a final shot off that catches Mathias in the throat causing him to drop clutching it in an attempt to not bleed to death.
Matt then walks over to him to finish the job with his dagger, and as he plunges his dagger into Mathias’ heart saying “This is for my Mother!”.
Matt tries to recover his arrows, but finds that they were all broken in the struggle. He binds his wounds as well as he can, and then digs a shallow grave for Mathias to try and hide the body. As he’s burying him Matt checks the body to see what Mathias had, and takes his pistol, shot, some money, 2 healing draughts, and a letter that was tucked up Mathias’ sleeve. He contemplates the armour and sword, but notices that they’ve got the Witch Hunter mark on them, so decides to bury them with him before heading back. On the way back he drinks down one of the healing draughts to help with his chest wound.
Back at the village the birth finishes taking place, everyone is quite worried until they find out that the baby is perfectly normal and healthy. The Mum decides to call him Rupert after his Grandfather. Rorek, Johann, and Nathaniel are starting to worry about Matt by this stage as it has been several hours. They head to the North gate to continue keeping watch, and Matt appears from far down the tree line to quickly wave he is ok, holding up the pistol to show Mathias is dead. Before Matt can duck back into the tree line Rorek signs that the baby was born and is ok. Matt disappears again to the groups annoyance.
Matt decides to wait until dark to rejoin the village, and hunts down a stag in the process for the celebration. The others help set up for the small feast the village does for a successful birth, and then join in on some drinking. Matt returns at dusk with his stag, but his injuries are noticed by Hans. Hans approaches him to find out if everything is alright, and while Matt insists it is, Hans picks up that something is not quite right, but says that they will speak on it further after the celebration.
Matt then drops off his Stag and takes Nathaniel off for a private talk. Matt tells him that he killed Mathias, and offers Nathaniel the pistol and bullets. Nathaniel accepts them, but asks Matt to hold onto them until they have cleared town. Matt also hands over the letter to Nathaniel, not knowing he can’t read, and Nathaniel says he’ll read it later to hide the fact he can’t read. Nathaniel tells Matt to keep quiet about it all, and that he’ll come up with a storey about what happened to Mathias. Matt agrees that he should, as his Noble Lardy Dardy training by his Mother has him covered for making up stories, Nathaniel gets quite annoyed at this and just leaves Matt standing there.
Rorek is able to round them all up for another drinking competition in an attempt to regain his honour against the humans. They agree to humour him and start in on the local beer, which isn’t too bad. After only a few rounds it goes to Johann’s head, and he quickly finds himself falling asleep from the long day. After another few rounds Nathaniel is the next one to pass out, leaving only Matt and Rorek. They go through quite a few rounds matching drink for drink, but eventually it catches up with Matt and he finds himself falling over and falling asleep almost instantly. Rorek is left standing, in a matter of speaking, but quite drunk. He has another drink to celebrate, drags the rest to bed with Hans’ help, and retires himself.
17th of Pflugzeit:
Hans wakes Matt up semi-early in the morning, quite loudly to the detriment of Matt’s throbbing headache, and says they need to speak about Mathais as he hasn’t returned. Matt tells Hans that Mathias left, and they he won’t be any further trouble, making sure never to directly confirm his involvement in that. Hans sighs at the news, tells Matt that he’ll have to send a letter to Matt’s Father about the possible trouble, but that he’ll leave out Matt’s involvement. Before Hans can leave Matt tells him that they believe they know what’s causing the mutations in the area, and that Hans should speak to Johann about it. Hans says he will, but he’ll let the others wake up when they are ready.
Matt slowly pulls himself out of bed, and goes off to hunt to clear his head while he waits for the others to wake up. The others eventually wake up, and they all meet up to discuss their plans. After the discussion of Matt’s injuries, Matt attempts to hand over the other healing potion he got off Mathias, but the group decide it would best if they all carried a couple, so Johann hands some of his spares around, not knowing that two that he keeps on him are fouled by chaos.
They decide to make their attempt to get the chaos stone from the well without consulting Hans, but no one in the village in a mood to stop them. So they tie weights to Johann to help him sink, and attach a rope to help pull him out, then send him down the well. With the help of the brass air bladder he made the previous day, Johann is easily able to hold his breath this time on the way down. Then using the magical sight he has been training himself in, he is able to locate the small chaos stone, more of a chaos pebble, and have the others hoist him out of there.
Up the top Rorek asks to look at it while they decide what to do with it, as they don’t want to risk it mutating them. Johann has an idea, and gets it back off Rorek, and using 3 brass coins forms a perfect metal sphere around it. The others had backed off in case combining magic and chaos went badly, but nothing unexpected happened. Johann then hands the brass sphere over to Rorek to hold, as Dwarves are known for being more resistant to Chaos.
They inform Hans of their success, who while not quite believing them, thanks them, and says that if it is true then his opinions of wizards has definitely improved. Everyone then gathers up their supplies and they head off south to Agheiten.
17th to 24th of Pflugzeit:
The journey over the Southern road takes about 8 days, during which Matt only fails twice to find food for them. Also on this trip Nathaniel gets Johann to read out the letter that Matt got off Mathias. They find out that Mathias was being thanked for his efforts in finding proof of the heretics in Grenzstadt, and that a reasonable sized force was being sent to bring them to Justice. It then goes on to say that he can’t stay around for this however, as they need him to travel to the town of Staig, as they have been handed a list of potential heretics by some of their loyal followers. A list of names is provided, but none of the names means anything to the group.
The group discusses what to do, but decide that Grenzstadt is too far out of the way, and too close to Blackfire Pass. However Staig is one of the stops on their way to the Elven lands, so they might investigate the names when they get there.
24th of Pflugzeit:
At Agheiten the group starts to discuss the whether to travel by land, or catch a boat up to Staig, but realising the danger they quickly decide on boat travel. Nathaniel is able to find a cargo barge heading up stream, captained by Captain Krugar Jr, and attempts to haggle. He doesn’t do too well, and the group is charged 25 silver for the 3 day journey.
25th to 26th of Pflugzeit:
Each night when they tie themselves up Matt jumps off to do a quick bit of hunting. On the second night while out in the woods at night he almost runs into an Orc. The Orc calls out a challenge and starts to chase him, but Matt is able to duck behind some bushes and lose them. However the Orc group is still charging forward, and Matt realises that they’ll soon reach the river and spot the boat. He tears off a small bit of his cloak, ties it around an arrow, sets it on fire, and shoot it up into the air to alert the boat of trouble. Thankfully Johann notices, and the boat starts to prepare to cast off, with only Rorek threatening to kill them preventing them from doing so before Matt returns.
Soon the Orcs are charging from the tree line, and Captain Krugar orders his men into line to try and hold back the Orcs with their barge poles. A Black Orc leads the charge and gets close to the boat, where Rorek uses the chance to jump down to engage the Black Orc, but barely hurts it for 1 damage. Nathaniel then fires his pistol at the Black Orc, but misses entirely. Johann summons his power to cast, and is able to weaken the Black Orc’s armour, also making it more difficult for the Black Orc to move. This has the side effect though of turning Johann’s armour bright pink. The other Orcs charge closer, but aren’t as fast so they don’t quite make it to the engagement yet. A few of the Barge men slam down their poles on the Black Orc, and also hurt it for 1 damage.
Captain Krugar then takes a barge pole, ramming it into the Black Orc also for 1 damage. Rorek goes all out on the Black Orc with a swing from his two weapons, dealing a total of 7 damage. The Black Orc roars and returns the attack for 4 damage, but also giving Rorek a concussion. Nathaniel is able to reload and fire his pistol, hitting the Black Orc for 4 damage, but due to leaving his guard down another Orc uses the chance to jump on board the barge. Johann fires a magic dart at the Black Orc, but it barely hurts it for 1 damage. Two Orcs join the engagement below and hit Rorek for 2 damage each. The Orc that made it on board slices at Nathaniel for a mighty 5 damage.
Matt finally catches up with the Orcs and appears from the forest. Barely taking a second to get his barring, Matt shoots the Black Orc in the back killing it, and hurts another Orc engaged with Rorek for 5 damage. Then burning through a lot of his energy he dashes onto the barge. Captain Krugar yells at Rorek to get on board, and then starts organising his men to shove off. Rorek cleaves into the injured Orc he’s engaged with, using the force of the blow to launch himself onto the barge, landing next to the Orc engaged with Nathaniel and embedding his axes into its back which kills it. Nathaniel uses the break of avoiding the Orc just killed to shoot another Orc which kills it. The victory is short lived however as another 3 climb onto the barge. One engages and hits Nathaniel which knocks him out, leaving him very close to death. Another Orc hits Matt for 5 damage, while the last attempts to hit Rorek but misses. With everyone on board the bargeman strain themselves pushing off as quickly as they can, leaving a gap between the barge and the shore. Johann dashes across to the other side of the barge, castin a protective spell upon him, while pouring a healing draught down Nathaniel’s throat, but it turns out to be one of the duds. The remaining Orcs attempt to jump on board, but only 3 make it.
Captain Krugar uses a barge pole to shove an Orc back into the river. Rorek continues his whirlwind of death killing another Orc, and badly injuring another. Matt moves to the other side of the barge for some breathing room, and shoots at another Orc on board killing it. Johann tries to pour another potion down Nathaniel’s throat, but again it is a dud, he then shoots a magic dart at the last injured Orc which finishes it off. The last two Orcs realise they’re outnumbered and jump overboard in an attempt to get away. Matt picks them off on their way to shore, easily killing them in the river.
It’s late by this stage so the game is called there.
