One day while in the Main hall, and still waiting for the snow storm to pass, Johann decides to take a long look around with his Witchsight.
He notices a very slight tickle of dark wind on Lord Lavett, and tracing it he’s able to determine it’s coming from a plain iron ring on the Lord’s finger.
However he’d need to see the ring up close to figure out more about it.
Nathaniel takes the day to go out fox hunting with Sir Phillipon, as well as Sir Loup, a Grail Knight who arrived at the castle not long after the rest of them.
Johann finds Matt and Rorek, and explains what he saw involving Lord Lavett and the ring upon his finger.
This seems to concern both of them quite a lot, and Rorek swears about humans always being corrupt by dark magics.
The next day Rorek intercepts Nathaniel, and has him go and visit Johann so Nathaniel can have the ring explained to him.
Once Nathaniel is caught up on event, they all debate about what would be the best course of action to take.
After much discussion about it they come to a general consensus that it would be best to have Johann take a closer look at the ring, but that it will be hard to achieve.
Matt ends up going hunting and comes back with two large winter hares that hare out due to their confusion with the weather.
On his way back into town he notices how much more impressive the fortifications are at the Northern end of the town compared to those on the Southern side.
He asks Nathaniel about it, who said that Lord Lavett explained that the town tends to be attacked by undead every few years from the Northern direction.
Nathaniel gets his Halfing chef to cook up a feast, and has Lady Simmone help him arrange it.
Nathaniel has his own Steward arrange the seating plan however, making sure Johann sits quite close to Lord Lavett.
That evening Johann takes a look at the ring from just a few metres away, but is still unable to determine too much.
He’s able to tell the others it’s an incredibly complex piece of work, perhaps several times more complex than the Elven curse, and he’d need to pretty much be holding it to figure it out in detail.
Nathaniel goes to see Lady Allaire before the night is over, and asks her about Lord Lavett’s sickness.
She explains to him that Lord Lavett has been sick for just over 6 years now, as she was sent for when he started becoming sick.
She’s been looking after him ever since.
Since then he’s not gotten better, but nor has the sickness gotten worse.
The next day Nathaniel goes to Lord Lavett, and this time asks him to tell the story of how he got the Iron Ring.
Lord Lavett explains that he’s had the ring for about 45 years now, as back in prime he tracked down and slew a great beast known as a Dragon Ogre.
It’s a very impressive tale, but also kind of unbelievable no matter how honest Lord Lavett seems.
Nathaniel sees Lady Allaire again, and mentions possibly getting Matt to help out, explaining that Matt is a priest of Rhya.
Lady Allaire considers it, but in the end turns the offer down.
So instead that night Matt attempts to sneak into Lord Lavett’s room and steal the ring.
Going through the servant passages, he’s able to make it into the Lord’s room, however he finds Lord Lavett is sleeping with the ring still on him, despite having taken off all other pieces of jewellery.
Having no other choice he sneaks back to Nathaniel’s rooms.
The next day Nathaniel and Rorek go down to the Martial Yards, where Rorek starts Nathaniel get more used to wielding the new Britonian sword entrusted to him.
After training he returns to the main hall, and asks again about the ring.
This time Lord Lavett turns him down, stating his health is playing up and he’s in no condition to tell another story that day.
The next morning Nathaniel and Rorek do more practice in the Martial Yards.
Afterwards Nathaniel approaches Sir Loup, and informs him of his concerns about the iron ring that Lord Lavett wears.
He explains that Rorek is also concerned, and has a Dwarfs sense for cursed rings.
Sir Loup asks him to be patient while he considers Nathaniel’s concerns.
The next day, after another bad night of snow, Nathaniel and Rorek are only able to get in a small amount of practice due to cold.
This time Sir Loup approaches Nathaniel after his training session, and explains he’s started to look in to the ring more.
He asks Nathaniel to step back on the issue, assuring him that he’ll be able to handle it.
Nathaniel is not sure if Sir Loup really will be able to handle it, and asks Matt to keep and eye on the Grail Knight.
Besides some more combat practice, nothing of note happens on this day.
On this day Matt sees Sir Loup go into the Garden of the Lady to see Lady Allaire, and decides to sneak in after him.
After scaling the wall, Matt hears them discussing the ring, and that Lady Allaire will be looking into it on his behalf.
Attempting to blend into the barren garden, Matt is seen by Sir Loup as he’s leaving the Garden.
Matt is lead off to the dungeon’s by Sir Loup, while Lady Allaire goes to see Lord Lavett.
Lord Lavett sends guards to arrest Nathaniel, and bring him before Lord Lavett.
Nathaniel attempts to lie to Lord Lavett about Matt’s instructions and orders, but Lord Lavett doesn’t believe him.
For attempting to lie to him, and therefore insulting him, Lord Lavett challenges Nathaniel to a duel, and if he survives then he’ll be put on trial for Matt’s crime of sneaking into the Garden of the Lady on Nathaniel’s orders.
Nathaniel, Johann, Rorek, and the rest of the followers, are placed under house arrest, while Matt is kept in the colder dungeons.
Nathaniel, Johann, and Rorek discuss their options, but really can’t come up with much besides Rorek winning a trial by combat.
Nathaniel attempts to find Sir Loup in the castle, but is unable to do so.
Rorek is able to find him, but by now Rorek is the only one left in the party that doesn’t speak Britonian.
This results in him almost getting in a fight with Sir Loup due to misunderstandings, but he just manages to avoid his and arrange for them to meet again around dinner time.
That evening during dinner Nathaniel explains to Sir Loup that he had sent Matt to follow him, as he was worried of the danger Sir Loup could get in looking inot the ring.
He asks Sir Loup to be careful, especially tonight when he finds out Lady Allaire will be looking into it.
Sir Loup explains that Lady Allaire will be looking into it while Lord Lavett bathes, so there’s not much Sir Loup can actually do, which concerns Nathaniel.
That night Nathaniel decides it’s best if Johann, Rorek, and himself patrol within shouting range of Lord Lavett’s room in case anything happens.
They still have access to their weapons and armour, so they start wondering around the top floor of the keep.
Eventually Johann hears a scream coming from Lord Lavett’s room, so the three of them run towards it.
Nathaniel attempts to bribe the guards on the door to let him in, but they refuse to budge despite the scream from inside.
The three of them pull back and debate what to do, Rorek decides they can’t wait, and before the guards can react he rushes past them and kicks the door open.
Inside they see that Lord Lavett is standing there naked holding his sword and dripping water from his bath, Lady Lavett is in bed looking in shock, and Lady Allaire lies dead against the far wall with blood staining the wall behind her.
Johann and Nahaniel end up having to fight the two guards at the door as they go in after Rorek.
Rorek meanwhile attacks Lord Lavett with a fury with his two axes.
Lord Lavett takes a lot of punishment for an old man, but without his plate he doesn’t last long.
The guards move in to kill Rorek, resulting in Johann and Nathaniel having to kill them first.
Once the shock has worn off Lady Lavett starts screaming, which results in more guards on the floor coming running towards the room.
